There are many things to do in our nation's capital. For one, you can explore all the branches of the government, taking tours of the White House, FBI Building, National Archives and Capital Hill. Walk the National Mall and see the monuments and memorials of our country: from the Washington Monument, you can proceed to the Vietnam Veterans Memorial, Lincoln Memorial, Korean War Veterans Memorial, FDR Memorial and the Jefferson Memorial for a nice half day walking tour.
On the eastern side of the Mall are many Smithsonian museums. Some of the more popular ones are the National Air & Space Museum, National Gallery of Art, National Museum of Natural History and the National Museum of American History. The Freer Gallery contains a large collection of Asian art and the latest addition to the area is the National Museum of African Art. Nearby, the Holocaust Museum educates the public on the tragic history of the Holocaust.
Take the kids to the National Zoo, and the Capital Children's Museum. Enjoy fine shopping in nearby Georgetown and great dining all around the city. Nearby Foggy Bottom is a charming neighborhood with great boutiques, cozy cafes and quaint cobblestone streets great for exploring.
Directly across the river is Arlington National Cemetery - make sure to see the changing of the guard, the eternal flame and the view from Robert E. Lee's house.
